Muscle Tension

Muscle tension (or muscle tightness) is a common cause of pain. Often triggered by stress – and typically characterised by the inability of the muscles to relax normally – this condition can affect any of the muscles in the body, causing sharp pain that makes it difficult to move.

Depending on the cause of the tension, Physio Health Clinic’s primary physiotherapist Andrew will draw on a range of treatments designed to encourage rigid muscles to relax. The treatments that he may use to target muscle tension include stretching and massaging the affected muscle to ease the tension, practicing functional tasks (such as sitting, standing, and gait training to help you combat tension during these activities), and exercises to promote normal movement patterns.

In rare neurological conditions, he may also offer recommendations for complementary muscle tension treatments. Examples of these may include recommendations on orthotics and splints for hands and feet to keep joints in optimal positions and prevent soft tissue shortening, hydrotherapy to loosen stiff joints and relax muscles, and advice on Botox injections.

Regardless of the treatment required, patients can be assured that Andrew is skilled in providing comprehensive diagnostic solutions to help manage muscle tension. His ultimate intention is to facilitate independence with functional tasks.
